Autobiography, 1907.

Photocopy of a typescript "Photostat made through the courtesy of the artist's daughter, Miss Francis T. Stuart and the Chicago Historical Society." Stuart recounts his ancestry, his childhood at Roupelmonde Plantation on the Coosaw River on Port Royal Island "in the days of Slavery" (describing Christmas holidays and spirituals sung by the slaves), his education, art studies in Europe, service in the Confederate Army (describing a battle near Pocotaligo, S.C., at Mackey's Point, and at Honey Hill, and Bentonville, N.C.), his observations of the aftereffects of Sherman's march through South Carolnia ("only stacks of chimneys"), hardships after the war, and his later life in Kentucky and Wisconsin. Also included iare the lyrics of a "boat song" about the Coosaw River written about 1830, lyrics of a spiritual, and biographical data on James R. Stuart, and some genealogical information about the Stuart family and related families.
